Abstract

Objective: To trace an epidemiological profile of deaths due to congenital malformation of the central nervous system (CNS) in Brazil, between 1996-2018. Methodology: This is a descriptive and retrospective epidemiological study, with analysis of deaths due to congenital malformation in the central nervous system, in children under 1 year old, in the period between 1996 and 2018, in Brazil. The records were obtained from the Mortality Information System (SIM) and the Live Birth Information System (Sinasc), through the Datasus-Net platform. Results and Discussion: From 32,469 notification forms, an average annual mortality rate of 4.72 / 10,000 live births was observed in the period. The main congenital malformations of the CNS were anencephaly and similar malformations (39.96%), congenital hydrocephalus (21.8%), other congenital malformations (15.84%) and spina bifida (9.51%). In addition, about 59.03% died within the first 7 days, with 61.9% of these within the first 24 hours. Conclusion: The improvement of prenatal care and reproductive counseling through the strengthening of basic care, would allow the prevention of numerous cases, as well as better monitoring of pregnancy and a safe and humanized delivery.
