Abstract

Objective: To trace the epidemiological profile of meningitis in the Bahian population, from 2009 to 2019. Methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive study that uses secondary data using the Recording Information System of the Ministry of Health of Brazil - SINAN , available on the virtual platform of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), from 2009 to 2019, where it was screened or epidemiological profile of meningitis in the pediatric population of Bahia. Results: 6362 pediatric meningitis cases were reported in Bahia. The year with the largest number was in 2009, with 1148. There is no concern with age and race, 26% occur in children aged 4 to 9 years, as well as the highest occurrence among pardos (78.4%). The majority (61.0%) were men. As the main etiologies involved in viral and bacterial infections and as for infectious serogroup, 82.9% had type C serogroup. The most used diagnoses are chemocytological (N = 4683). Regarding the evolution of patients, 5368 were discharged and 535 died; of these, 441 due to meningitis, predominantly in <1 year (N = 135). Conclusion: There was a reduction in the number of cases during the study period, in addition to a greater age group of 4-9 years, male, brown race, viral etiology and type C serogroup of meningoccocal meningitis. The epidemiological curve demonstrated a positive effect on the population. In this way, the present research made a contribution with relevant information for fundamental public policies in the prevention and control of this disease.
