EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF PATIENTS AFFECTED BY HEAD TRAUMA SERVICED AT A PUBLIC HOSPITAL OF TERESINA

Abstract


Objective : to describe the epidemiological profile of patien ts affected by traumatic brain injury assisted in Teresina Emergency Hospital from January 2011 to January 2013. Methods: An observational, retrospective, quantitative, nature documentary . The medical records of patients from the Emergency Hospital of Teresina in the period from January 2011 to January 2013 with a diagnosis of TBI were selected . Data were collected from Datamed 1.1 program and an Excel spreadsheet program , provided by the hospital, being subjected to descriptive statistical analysis .Results: 2382 admissions were registered with a diagnosis of TBI in this period , 171 had severe TBI , 487 to 1724 light moderate . 187 records were excluded from the sample due to missing data . Grew the number of admissions in 2012 at 38.75% , mild TBI accounted for the largest growth in the same year 62.70 % since the severe TBI decreased by -74.02 % . The percentage of motorcycle accidents for each type of TBI , mild , moderate and severe are respectively 63.19 % , 68.43 % and 65.00% . Deaths were represented by the following rates : 2.22 % mild TBI , moderate TBI 12.88 % and 16.87% severe TBI . Predominant age from 21 to 40 years old and male. Conclusion : a profile of patients affected by TBI assisted in Hospital Emergency Teresina was characterized by predominant age 21-40 years and male victims of car accident . There was the need to implement preventive measures and educate society about the causes of TBI.
