Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate sleep patterns and factors associated with its quality among the students of the medical school from Federal University of Paraiba. Methods: We analyzed 277 students of both genders, who answered the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. The collected data were assessed by: a) descriptive statistics; b) Chi-square test to evaluate the association between variables; c) odds ratio for evaluating the chance of the factors considered to influence the quality of sleep. Results: The analysis of the questionnaires revealed that 72.2% of students have poor sleep quality and 81.6% had severe daytime sleepiness. Correlated significantly with the low quality of sleep: difficulty sleeping, use of sleep medications, interference with daily activities, do not sleep within 30 minutes at least once a week, waking up during the night or early in the morning, not breathe comfortably and have bad dreams. Conclusions: It is recommended the adoption of strategies to reduce stress and sleep hygiene in order to avoid most associated disorders, as well as the adoption of regular hours devoted to sleep and study.
